Aerial photo showing settling ponds after concentrates of phosphate ore is processed and is green with nutrients.
Large quantities of phosphates to waterways accelerates algae and plant growth in natural waters; enhancing eutrophication and depleting the water body of oxygen. This can lead to fish kills and the degradation of habitat with loss of species.
Decaying uranium from phosphate mines also releases radon, an odorless, radioactive gas that is linked to lung cancer.
